How it works

Expected loss = average bet × bets per hour × hours × house edge. It is the long-run average cost of playing, not a prediction for one session. Short-term results swing widely around it, especially on high-volatility slots.

Worked example

A 1.00 slot spin 500 times an hour for two hours is 1,000 wagered. At a 96% RTP the house edge is 4%, so the expected loss is 40, or 20 an hour. The same stake on European roulette at 35 spins an hour costs about 0.95 an hour.

Why speed matters most

Players tend to compare games by house edge, but speed multiplies it. A low-edge game played fast can cost more per hour than a higher-edge game played slowly. Use the figure as an entertainment budget and decide before you start how many hours you are paying for.
