How it works

An each-way bet is two bets of equal size: one on your selection to win and one on it to place. The place part pays a fraction of the win odds, set by the place terms. If it wins, both parts pay; if it only places, you lose the win part and collect the place part.

Worked example

10 each way (20 in total) at 8/1 with 1/5 place terms. If the horse is placed, the place part returns 10 × (1 + 8 × 0.2) = 26, a profit of 6. If it wins, you also collect 90 on the win part: 116 back in total.

Check the terms

How many places are paid and at what fraction depends on the race type and number of runners, and bookmakers often add extra places as a promotion at shorter fractions. A non-runner can change the terms after you bet. The racecard or bet slip always shows what applies.
